I’m Pregnant… Now What?
I’m Pregnant… Now What?
That moment the test shows two lines, or the words “pregnant” appear — your whole world changes in an instant. For some, it brings joy and excitement. For others, shock, fear, or even a mix of emotions they didn’t expect. However you’re feeling, it’s okay. Take a deep breath — you don’t have to have it all figured out right now.
1. Confirm Your Pregnancy
Even if home tests are usually accurate, it’s important to have your pregnancy confirmed by a healthcare professional. We can arrange a blood test to make sure everything is progressing as it should. It is very difficult to confirm more than viability with an ultrasound before 6 weeks.
2. Book Your First Antenatal Visit
Your first official pregnancy appointment is usually around 6 – 8 weeks. At this visit, Dr Donée will take a detailed history, run some baseline blood tests, and discuss what to expect over the coming months.
3. Start Thinking About Lifestyle Changes
Pregnancy is a good time to look after yourself. Small, simple changes can make a big difference:
· Start (or continue) a pregnancy-safe supplement with folic acid.
· Avoid smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs.
· Aim for a balanced diet with enough protein, iron, and fresh fruit and vegetables.
· Rest when you can - fatigue is normal, especially in the first trimester.
4. Understand Common Early Symptoms
Morning sickness, breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings, and fatigue are all part of early pregnancy for many women. They can be uncomfortable but are usually not harmful. If symptoms are severe — such as vomiting that prevents you from keeping food or fluids down - reach out to us.
5. Explore Your Support System
Pregnancy is not just about your body - it’s also about your emotional wellbeing. Think about who you can lean on: your partner, family, friends, or a support group. Sometimes just talking about your feelings makes everything feel lighter.
6. Ask Questions (There Are No Silly Ones!)
This is your journey, and no two pregnancies are the same. Whether you’re worried about what you can eat, how much you can exercise, or what’s safe for baby, ask us. We are here to guide you, not judge you.
7. Give Yourself Grace
Pregnancy is a season of change — physically, emotionally, and mentally. You don’t need to be perfect. Your body is already doing something incredible. Allow yourself space to rest, feel, and adjust.
Final Thought:
Finding out you’re pregnant can feel overwhelming, but it’s also the start of an extraordinary journey. One step at a time, with the right care and support, you’ll navigate it beautifully.
